Archaeological Field Skills Bootcamp

Monday, May 17 to Friday, May 28

Application Deadline: April 11, 2021

The Penn Museum recognizes that opportunities for archaeological fieldwork in the US and internationally have been lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We invite Penn undergraduates and graduating seniors to develop their field skills and learn more about what it’s like to be an archaeologist at a free two-week program designed and led by Penn faculty and Museum staff.

This in-person program will introduce participants to topics such as

  • Field survey
  • Mapping, including drone photography and GIS
  • Artifact processing, data recording, and basic field conservation
  • Field and object photography
  • Setting up an excavation unit
  • Archaeological illustration
  • Basic laboratory analysis
  • Types of fieldwork, including public or community-based, salvage, urban, and museum-based
  • Presentations and conversations with archaeologists working around the world
