Virtual Event - Penn Museum

Part of the Digital Daily Dig Series

On the last Friday of the month, join conservators in our labs to get a behind-the-scenes look at their work caretaking Penn Museum artifacts! Hear about the treatments artifacts need, see conservation in action, and gain access to objects not on view in our galleries in these short special features. Virtual visitors can ask our talented staff questions through live Facebook chat. Plus we’ll share fascinating Artifact Lab blog posts to help illuminate the work of conservators.

How do we display artifacts that do not have a rigid composition? Conservators work closely with museum mount-makers to ensure that artifacts on exhibit are properly supported inside their cases. This task can be quite complex, especially with organic artifacts made from anything once living, such as textiles, animal hides, fur, and feathers. Museum staff often need to provide sufficient artifact support while avoiding distracting visual obstructions. Fortunately, conservators have a few tricks up their lab coat sleeves to aid these efforts, including the use of super-strong magnets. With your newfound understanding of the role these tiny tools play in our displays, you can play “hunt for the magnet” on your next in-person visit to Native American Voices: The People Here and Now.
